In Search of the Musk Ox in the Heart of Dovrefjell

There are places where time seems to stand still.

Dovrefjell, in the heart of Norway, is one of them. A wild, rugged, and magnificent landscape, where vast valleys, high plateaus, and endless stretches of tundra tell a story rooted in the distant past.

It is here that we will set out in search of one of the Arctic’s most fascinating and iconic animals: the musk ox.

A true relic of the Ice Age.

A Journey Back in Time

The musk ox is one of the most ancient creatures still roaming the Earth. Having survived the dramatic climatic changes that followed the last Ice Age, this imposing inhabitant of the Arctic tundra has preserved characteristics over thousands of years that make it seem almost untouched by time.

In Norway, its history is closely linked to Dovrefjell, the only area in the country where a wild population of musk oxen can be found.

It was here, during the 20th century, that several attempts were made to reintroduce the species. After numerous challenges, setbacks, and changes in population numbers, Dovrefjell has become the iconic stronghold of the musk ox in Norway.

And this is exactly where our journey will take us.

Dovrefjell: Into the Wild

Our adventure will lead us into the heart of Dovrefjell–Sunndalsfjella National Park, a unique wilderness characterized by vast plateaus, tundra, peat bogs, and mountains stretching as far as the eye can see.

This will be much more than a simple excursion in search of an animal.

It will be a complete immersion in a wild and untamed environment, where every step brings us closer to the possibility of encountering one of the most extraordinary creatures of the Nordic wilderness.

And we will experience it during one of the most captivating times of the year: the Norwegian autumn.

During this season, Dovrefjell undergoes a remarkable transformation. The tundra vegetation bursts into shades of red, orange, yellow, and gold, creating a spectacular contrast with the mountains and the immense open spaces of the plateau.

We will move slowly through the landscape, observing our surroundings and learning to interpret the signs of the wilderness. We will search for tracks, movement, and distant silhouettes on the horizon, knowing that an encounter with a musk ox can never be guaranteed.

And that is precisely where the magic lies.

Three Days in the Field

The experience includes three full days in the field, entirely dedicated to exploring the landscape and searching for musk oxen.

Each day will involve approximately 6–9 km of trekking, with minimal elevation gain, but across terrain that can be uneven and particularly wet.

Dovrefjell is far from a tamed landscape. Along the way, we may encounter waterlogged ground, peat bogs, and marshy areas — essential features of this ecosystem that make the experience even more authentic.

For this reason, arriving properly equipped is essential.

We recommend warm clothing suitable for Norwegian autumn conditions, multiple layers to adapt to changing weather, and, above all, fully waterproof hiking boots or shoes designed for wet and uneven terrain.

In Search of an Extraordinary Encounter

Our main goal will, of course, be to observe musk oxen in their natural habitat, always respecting the animals’ space, behaviour, and safe viewing distances.

We might find one standing motionless among the rocks, slowly crossing a valley, or appearing as nothing more than a dark silhouette against the vast tundra.

Sometimes, we may need to walk for hours before catching a glimpse of one.

Other times, a musk ox might suddenly appear before our eyes, almost out of nowhere.

Whatever happens, every day will be an essential part of the adventure.

Because Dovrefjell is not simply a place you visit to “see” an animal.

It is a place to experience the wilderness, embrace its silence, immerse yourself in its untamed nature, and search, step by step, for a creature that seems to belong to another age.

A primordial wilderness. An animal that survived the Ice Age.

And the opportunity to experience it all in the heart of the Norwegian autumn.

Welcome to Dovrefjell.
